Lawton school presented check for marathon participation

LAWTON, Okla._Woodland Hills Elementary was presented a $500 check Tuesday morning for having the most participants in the Oklahoma City Memorial Kids' Marathon.

"For your P.E. department! And you get to keep this traveling trophy for a whole year."

Race organizers say 180 Woodland Hills Elementary students, parents and teachers participated in the marathon. Before getting there, they had to log 25 miles and finish the last 1.2 miles on race day. Race director Kelly Burleson says it's this kind of participation that keeps the marathon going year after year.

"It's important to hold this marathon so we can keep our Oklahoma City National Memorial thriving each year and also in honor of the 168 people that lost their lives and the lives that were forever changed," said Burleson.

April 19, 2015, marked 20 years since the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. Burleson says they hope to grow the race every year because it's all about teaching children to live healthy lifestyles and make good choices.
