Woodland Hills honored as 'model school'

LAWTON, Okla._Woodland Hills Elementary marked its seventh year of being selected as a "model school" for the Great Expectations Professional Development Program with a celebration at the school.

To earn the honor of being a model school, at least 90 percent of the teaching staff had to successfully implement the program into daily instruction. Great Expectations is based on creating high expectations for students, a climate of mutual respect, increasing teacher knowledge and responsibility and building high self-esteem in students.

"I believe that a kid's self-esteem is half of them making grades academically. If they don't believe in themselves, they can't learn to read. They can't get up and perform on stage. So, teachers work really hard with students using Great Expectations to help kids to know that they can be anything that they want to be," said Lisa Carson, Woodland Hills Elementary principal.

Great Expectations is designed to help students become career ready, become better students, better members of their community and better people in general.
