Body of Fort Sill soldier spotted

Staff Sgt. Hawkins Staff Sgt. Hawkins

FORT SILL, Okla._Oklahoma Highway Patrol said the body of a Fort Sill soldier was spotted floating down stream.

Following the continued search for Staff Sergeant David Lee Hawkins, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said Wednesday that Hawkins body was spotted twice by soldiers, floating down stream in Medicine Bluff Creek. An attempt to recover the body with the help of a Black Hawk Helicopter was unsuccessful. The body is now believed to be hung up in brush. However, troopers say because Lake Lawtonka's flood gates have been opened--water levels in the creek are too high to safely operate a water craft in order to reach the victim, suspending Wednesday's search.

Hawkins went missing over the weekend. Hawkins' car was found submerged in Medicine Bluff Creek and officials believe he may have been attempting to cross a low-water crossing when he was swept away in the current. Rough terrain and worsening weather conditions complicated search efforts.
