Medical lock boxes provided to curb prescription abuse

LAWTON, Okla._It's National Prevention Week, which is dedicated to increasing public awareness of, and action around, substance abuse and mental health issues.

According to the Wichita Mountains Prevention Network, prescription drug abuse is an epidemic that claims the life of 100 people every day in the United States. The theme of this year's National Prevention Week is "The voice of one, the power of all." Mayor Pro Tem Doug Wells signed a proclamation Wednesday to provide lock boxes to southern Oklahoma treatment services and announced new funding.

"This is one strategy, the proper storage of prescription drugs because if you look around at the nation, across the states and communities. Often, these prescription drugs are easily accessible. Storing them properly is the first step, or one of the steps, to eventually minimize prescription drug abuse," said Tony Wohlers, director of academic enrichment.

Statistics show that an estimated 52 million people in the United States have used prescription drugs for nonmedical reasons at least once in their lifetimes.
