Rain does not damper Memorial Day event

LAWTON, Okla._At least one Memorial Day event went on as planned despite the threat of severe weather.

A group of local residents traveled from Elmer Thomas Park to locations around Lawton with American flags flying from their vehicles. They did it to remind drivers of the significance of Memorial Day.

The group said they decided to have their own parade after receiving positive feedback from a similar demonstration on Armed Forces Day.

Spencer Fletcher and Jayson Toohey said the weather was not a factor when deciding whether to honor our fallen soldiers.

"The soldiers gave their sacrifice, their life during bad weather, during bad times. Weather is not going to stop us, we still need to be out there showing our support. Weather will not stop our group," said Fletcher.

"Even though it's kind of a day off for a lot of people from work, they don't actually sit there and sit back and remember all of our lost fallen brothers and sisters in arms," said Toohey.

After driving around Lawton, the group traveled to Elgin National Cemetery to reflect on the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice.
