Opening statements heard in Dutton murder trial

LAWTON, Okla._A Lawton murder trial started Monday with the jury hearing from the victim's girlfriend.

Bryan Dutton has been charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Samuel Ruffin in April of last year.

It took lawyers most of the day to seat a jury. An 8-woman, 4-man panel was completed around 4:00 p.m. and opening statements were delivered. The state's first witness, the victim's girlfriend, detailed what happened the night Ruffin was killed. She said she and Ruffin were arguing in the parking lot of the Dew Drop Inn on Fort Sill Boulevard. She said that's when Dutton intervened, against her wishes, and shot Ruffin to death in the parking lot.

Monday's proceedings ended after her testimony. The trial is scheduled to resume Tuesday morning at the Comanche County Courthouse.
