Altus moves to Stage 1 water restriction

ALTUS, Okla._The Altus City Council voted to move into Stage 1 water restrictions Tuesday night.

Tom Steed—the city's primary reservoir— is at 100 percent, which prompted the discussion about moving the city from a Stage 3 water restriction to Stage 1, which means voluntary conservation. Altus Chamber of Commerce CEO Brian Bush says he hopes the city will work toward creating a conservation mindset, no matter how much water is available.

"It wasn't that long ago that things were fairly severe, so we want to make sure that moving forward we avoid going back there if we can. We can't control when it rains, but we can be smart about how we use water."

Council members also hope to eventually revamp the city's water ordinance, so all water sources will be taken into account. The current rules only use Tom Steed Lake as a benchmark.

The city manager and staff will continue to work on developing the new policy.
