Gas station clerk beaten during robbery

ALTUS, Okla._A man in Altus is in police custody, accused of brutally beating a gas station clerk before robbing the store.

Witnesses inside the Valero gas station on North Main Street said a black man made his way behind the counter Tuesday afternoon, where he assaulted a female clerk.

They said the clerk was bleeding from her lip. The robber reportedly stole a pack of cigarettes, before taking off in a pickup. Witnesses were able to get the robber's license plate number and report it to police. A short time later, the suspect was arrested at a home in the 1300 block of Blaine Street.

The victim's injuries required stitches both in and outside of her mouth.
