Commissaries takeover by private companies delayed

WASHINGTON, DC._Oklahoma's Senior U.S. Senator says his colleagues have helped delay a plan that would turn the operation of military commissaries over to private companies.

Wednesday, the senate approved an amendment by Senator Jim Inhofe to the defense funding bill that would require a cost analysis before any pilot programs begin. Inhofe says there are too many unknowns regarding the impact of privatization on military families. Some estimates show that a military family of four that shops exclusively at the commissary sees a saving of up to 30%.

The amendment does not expressly rule out the possibility of privatization, but requires the Defense Department to study the idea, and present a report to Congress by February.
