LPS ranks 5th in state

LAWTON, Okla._The latest statistics on graduation rates are in, and the Lawton Public School District ranks 5th in the state.

The numbers were revealed during Thursday night's school board meeting. Superintendent Tom Deighan pointed out it's the high point of a steady climb over the past five years. The survey analyzed data from the class of 2014, and showed Lawton had a 93.2% percent graduation rate. Over the previous five years, the district's average was 86.9%. In comparison to other districts, Lawton trailed only Edmond, Norman, Stillwater, and Bartlesville.

"I've got to thank our high school and our middle school principals, .really every teacher, every principal in the district, the parents, and the students. It's a phenomenal result for our district and I couldn't be prouder," said Lawton Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Tom Deighan.

Deighan also announced that the school board accepted bids to buy two vacant buildings---Jackson Elementary, which was closed in 2014, and the former professional development center. Deighan expects the sales to be completed very quickly.
