Veterans honored during Fourth of July weekend

LAWTON, Okla._Some of our military veterans were honored Thursday night at a ceremony at a retirement center.

A crowd of more than 200 came to salute those who've served. Former Fort Sill Commander, Major General Lee Baxter was the featured speaker. He spoke of the importance of the military not only to our community, but the American way of life.   General Baxter said he was especially proud to honor those who served long ago.

“We still have some World War II Veterans that are with us, and Korean War Veterans, and those groups are getting smaller and smaller, so it's special to be able to come and recognize them particularly,” General Baxter said.

"This was to honor them, this July 4th, Independence Day weekend. You can honor them any day of the year, but this was a great night to do that,” City of Lawton Mayor Fred Fitch said.

Mayor Fitch read a proclamation honoring the veterans, and as the brass section from Fort Sill's 77th Army Band played the anthems of each of the armed forces, veterans stood to be recognized.
