LAWTON, Okla._The Comanche County man accused of leaving a car wreck that severely injured a woman who was riding with him made his first appearance in court Wednesday.
Dalon Pointer was charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving an injury, which is a felony. He was arrested Tuesday night in Cyril. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol had been searching for him since early Saturday morning after Pointer drove his pickup off the road and slammed into a tree near East 135th Street and Gore Boulevard around 2:25 a.m.
The accident report said he was able to walk away, but he left his passenger, Angel Salazar, who suffered broken bones and other injuries. She is still at OU Medical Center recovering from those injuries.
Georgie Salazar, Angel Salazar's brother, says the family was worried that Pointer would make it out of the state. They were afraid that Angel wouldn't get justice. Ever since Georgie Salazar heard the news about his sister being involved in a car wreck, he has struggled to keep a clear mind.
"It's been very stressful trying to deal with the fact that she was pretty much left there for dead, basically. It makes you wonder what kind of person would do that and not even report that they left someone like that," said Salazar.
The tree prevented the truck from possibly doing a nose dive right into the creek. Georgie still has a lot of unanswered questions about the wreck.
"It's crazy. It makes me wonder how fast he must have been driving in the first place. I'm not sure if he was intoxicated or what happened that he lost control in the first place, but it just blows my mind, and then again that he just left her in that type of area. I just don't see it," said Salazar.
Pointer's criminal history includes a conviction for misdemeanor assault and battery in 2010 when he stabbed or cut three friends of his former girlfriend, and rammed a car into her car. He was given a 90-day suspended sentence for that. Georgie says no one in his family had knowledge of Pointer's criminal history.
"I've barely been finding out a lot myself through mutual friends and Facebook and whatnot. He's got quite a bit of history that I'm finding out. So, that's freaky," said Salazar.
Angel Salazar is still trying to recover from the fractures in her neck and back as well as internal injuries. The Salazar family says she is gingerly walking, but she is not close to leaving OU Medical Center yet.
Friends and family of Angel Salazar have set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for medical expenses.
Pointer also has a warrant for his arrest out of Wichita Falls in connection to a bank robbery. The Wichita Falls Police Department lists him as a person of interest in the Fort Sill National Bank robbery that occurred at the Kemp Street location Monday morning. The bond on the warrant was set at $350,000.
