United Way kicks off pacesetters campaign

LAWTON, Okla._The United Way of Southwest Oklahoma is hoping to raise more than $1.69 million during its annual pacesetters "Be the One" campaign.

The agency kicked off the fundraiser with a luncheon Friday afternoon in Lawton. As is tradition, they're hoping to raise money for 19 local charities. Campaign chair Carlos Irizarry says the United Way looks to offer a hand up, not a hand out to those who are struggling.

"They have situations where they're really in dire straits, mean while they're working, so it's one of those types of situations of being able to get out of poverty," said Irizarry.

The pacesetters are a critical part of the donation efforts. They raise awareness and money in support of the United Way. Irizarry says they hope to reach their donation goal by the end of the holiday season in 2016.
