Local Democrats support opening primaries to independents

TULSA, Okla. (AP) _ Some Oklahoma Democrats appear to be moving closer to allowing independents to vote in the party's primary elections.

The Tulsa World reports a majority of local Democrats favored the idea during a meeting on Friday.

Most of those attending said they were delegates to the state party convention July 25th in Oklahoma City, where the proposal will be voted on.

Independent registration has grown from 3 percent to 13 percent over the past 20 years in Oklahoma. There are about 260,000 unaffiliated voters in the state, many younger than their Republican or Democratic counterparts.

State law gives individual parties the option to allow independents to vote in their primaries, although none has ever done so.
