Water main break detours traffic

LAWTON, Okla._Traffic along a busy road will continue to be diverted following the discovery of a second broken water main.

Over the weekend, water was shut off to businesses and residents in southwest Lawton following a water main break near Southwest 42nd Street and Lee Boulevard. The line was repaired early Monday morning, but after resident’s continued to complain of low water pressure, and city crews made an unexpected discovery.

"They went to the field and started looking and they found a main break on a 12-inch pipe," explained Afsaneh Jabbar, assistant director of water.

That break was located in a field near Southwest 44th Street and "K" Avenue, and was repaired within a few hours. Traffic on Southwest Lee Boulevard will continue to be detoured for the next few weeks as crews work to fill in the 10-foot hole that was dug to repair the line. During the meantime, the turning lane from Ridge Terrace to Southwest 42nd Street will remain open to eastbound traffic.

The speed limit will also be reduced to 20 mph. Drivers have been asked to be cautious when driving through the construction zone.
