Social media paramount in bank robbery suspect's arrest

WICHITA FALLS, Texas_A wanted bank robber is behind bars in Texas, helping to clear up several recent robberies, including one last week in Lawton.

Wichita Falls police, along with the FBI, arrested Stephen Landon Mack at America’s Best Value Inn around 2:30 a.m. Thursday. Lawton police say social media played a big role in that arrest.

"We actually started receiving info from social media on our Facebook page. A couple people said ‘hey this sounds like the robbery in Wichita Falls.’ We even had people send us photographs of people they found on Facebook they thought fit this description," Captain Craig Akard explained.

Following his arrest, Mack admitted to committing the July 18 robbery of a Lawton

IBC Bank, where he demanded money from a clerk before reaching over the counter and stealing the cash. Just two days earlier, police say Mack was seen robbing a Wells Fargo bank inside a Wichita Falls United Supermarket.

Wednesday, police say Mack was caught again on surveillance video robbing a bank in Sherman, Texas. In this robbery, he's seen climbing onto the counter before reaching for the money. And in an attempt to disguise his forearm tattoo, he used a bandage to wrap his arm.

Mack never used a weapon during these robberies, but police say these crimes were just as serious.

"Anytime someone commits a robbery, that is a violent crime whether they have a weapon or not. It could easily escalate into something else," Captain Akard explained.

Mack is facing robbery charges in Wichita County, Captain Akard says he is also expected to face charges in Comanche County.
