Lawton church hosting back to school event, health fair

LAWTON, Okla._A Lawton church hopes to send children to school this year, not only well supplied, but healthy and with plenty of encouragement to reach their academic goals.

This is the 15th year for St. John's Missionary Baptist Church to host its annual Back to School Prayer event. The event is Saturday, August 8, but this year they will combine it with a health fair. The back to school prayer event will provide supplies and backpacks for 150 students between kindergarten and 12th-grade.

Students will also be asked to fill out commitment cards and the parents will fill out pledge cards, which are all prayed over by members of the church throughout the year.

"The kids make commitments like, 'this year I'm going to make the honor roll,' or 'this year I'll do better in math.' And parents make a commitment to be more involved in a student's education," Dr. Sylvia Williams, Outreach Committee chairperson, explained.

Health Department officials, along with the Oklahoma Healthcare Authority, will be there to provide health and dental information. There will also be free haircuts. Registration for the Back to School Prayer event and community health fair begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, and the actual event runs from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at St John's Missionary Baptist Church, 1504 SW N.H. Jones Ave., in Lawton.
