There are just under two weeks until the beginning of another school year for Lawton public schools. For the past seven years, Lawton has tried to make that transition a little easier with their Back to School Bash. There were hundreds of preregisters and registrations Saturday morning at the event. All the work so kids can be school ready with clothes, shoes and backpacks.
People braved the hot temperatures and burning sun to make sure they got what they needed for school. This includes backpacks loaded with supplies, to make sure all students are ready for the upcoming, and sometimes dreaded, first day.
Shereyl Grubbs, co-event coordinator, says this is one way for the city to show appreciation toward its citizens.
"This means as a community we support you guys,” Grubbs said. “Everyone out there, this isn't about who can or can't support. If you need something, come out here and let us get you what you need, whether it be school supplies, resources or information."
There was also a lot of fun to be had too.
"We want to make a good memory for the family,” Grubbs said. “So we have snow cones, stamps, face painting and we have got the wrestling center out here doing some shows. We also have hot dogs, and hopefully everyone is having a really great time."
Grubbs says all of these area back to school events have one similar goal, which is encouraging education.
"We just want to make sure as a community that people feel prepared, and people feel empowered to go back to school," Grubbs said.
