Man dead after officer-involved shooting

ARDMORE, Okla._Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is looking into an officer-involved shooting that left one man dead in his front lawn. Officers got a call from 41-year-old Eric Tompkins' mother saying he was suicidal and had swallowed rat poison.

When officers came, they found Tompkins outside refusing to obey commands to keep his hands out of his pockets. Officials say an officer saw Tompkins pull out what looked like a gun from his pocket, and that's when an officer opened fire.

A neighbor and family friend Clara Matthews spoke with Tompkins' mother after her son was taken to the hospital. She said the mother was in the kitchen with an officer when her son was shot. Tompkins was pronounced dead at the hospital. Matthews say Tompkins was a quiet man, but was suffering from depression.

Matthews also says all Tompkins had on him was a lighter and a cell phone, but no gun. Officials say that is for OSBI to determine and for the district attorney to make the decision on whether the shooting was justified.
