LPS officials encourage student safety

LAWTON, Okla._The night before Lawton Public School students start the new school year, Superintendent Tom Deighan is encouraging everyone who drives near schools to be especially watchful as children make their way to and from their first day of class.

"Kids are excited. Never know what a kid's going to do, but in addition to that, just want to remind people there's always going to be growing pains and hiccups the first day of school. There will always be something, but please just communicate with your principal. We will work tirelessly to address any problems, so just communicate with us so we can help,” Deighan said.

Deighan made his comments following Thursday night's school board meeting, where he updated the members on the progress of some construction projects. Deighan said work on the MacArthur Middle School roof is finished, as well as smaller jobs at Hugh Bish and Whittier Elementary.

He noted that crews will soon begin work on replacing the windows at Eisenhower High School, which will improve the building's safety, and save on energy costs.
