Hobart is coming off a down season in 2014, one in which they finished 3-7 and failed to make the playoffs. The Bearcats have a new coach taking over in 2015. It's a familiar face, former defensive coordinator Jeff Coakley, who has been on the staff for the last five years.
"I know all of these kids. They know me. They know what this program is about, what it was like back in the 80's, 90's and even the early 2000's. They've just bought in and are really getting after it for us here," Coakley said.
"It's been pretty fun. We've always gotten along with him good and he's always gotten along with us good," said senior Deaton Smith. "It's just been really fun to have him and he knows what he's doing."
Coakley's promotion maintains continuity within the program, but he will be making a few changes to their offensive and defensive schemes.
"We're going to run a 4-3 defense this year. It's a little different from the 3-4 they've been running here in the past," Coakley said. "Offensively we're going to run a lot of tight end. We're going to have two back sets. We've got a quarterback that's a senior and has been a three year starter. He'll be able to throw it around pretty good so we're going to run some spread as well."
Hobart will open up the season on the road. They'll travel to Mangum on September 4th.
