State Labor Commissioner stabbed to death, flags lowered

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla._The Oklahoma State Labor Commissioner was stabbed to death Sunday evening at an Oklahoma City restaurant.

State Labor Commissioner Mark Costello was the victim in a stabbing at Braum's just after 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Authorities say Costello was meeting with his 26-year-old son, Christian Costello, at the restaurant.

According to police, witnesses saw the suspect, Christian Costello, continue stabbing Mark Costello from behind. Witnesses pulled Christian Costello off of his father until authorities could arrive. Authorities said Mark Costello had stab wounds to the head and neck.

Mark Costello was transported to OU Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Christian Costello is in police custody. As of Sunday evening, police were still interviewing witnesses.

Flags will be lowered later Monday after an executive order is filed.

“I was shocked and greatly saddened to hear of Labor Commissioner Mark Costello's tragic death last night. My prayers and deepest sympathies go out to his family, friends and staff. Oklahoma has lost a dedicated public servant and a good man,” Governor Mary Fallin said in a statement. “In honor of Mark’s life and his service to the state, all flags on state property will be flown at half-staff through the end of the week.”
