City Council approves hotel-motel tax increase

LAWTON, Okla._Visitors to the Lawton-Fort Sill area may be looking to pay more in taxes for their hotel stay.

The Lawton City Council voted to place a half-percent hotel-motel tax increase on the next ballot. November 10, voters will deciding whether or not to set the new tax rate at 5.5 percent.

Debra Welch, president and CEO of the Lawton-Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce, says this rate increase only serves to benefit the community.

"The increase was so that we could do more. It's been at 5 percent since it was first brought into Lawton. Other communities have successfully increased theirs. People in the community don't pay the tax, so they're happy to let visitors pay a little bit more to make our community better," Welch said.

If passed at the polls, the new tax rate would take effect May 1, 2016, and end April 30, 2021.
