"Floodgates open" for Mayfield, OU

With the score at only 3-0, questions such as 'Will this offense work?' and 'Does Baker Mayfield have what it takes?' may have crossed some Sooner minds.
Those concerns were squashed quick as the Sooners went on to route the Zips 41-3. Mayfield threw for almost 400 yards and three TD's. Game one jitters may have gotten to the team early, but the coaching staff convinced them to stay with it.

"We look back on it, but it was the first five drives that we didn't have any points or any movement really. First two were penalties. The next couple were just basic mistakes that we don't normally make. Some blocking assigments and just dropping the ball. It happens, in the first game you get the jitters, so it took a little bit to settle down. But coach Riley talks about it. When we settle in, the flood gates are open. It happened late. Would have like for it to happen earlier, but it happened," said Baker Mayfield, OU junior quarterback.

"I thought the kids really hung in there. They really trusted what we were doing even though we didn't have the results we wanted in the beginning,” said Lincoln Riley, OU offensive coordinator. “We just kept saying, the floodgates are going to open. The floodgates are going to open. Just stay with it. And then I was proud that in the first game that our guys were able to that and to trust in us that much because that's one of the hardest things to do in a first game. And our guys did that."

OU now prepares to travel to Knoxville next Saturday to take on the Number 25 Tennessee Volunteers.
