Lawton announces plan to demolish old city hall

LAWTON, Okla._Lawton's old city hall building will be torn down at the end of September.

Assistant City Manager Jim Russell announced Tuesday that demolition is scheduled to start the week of September 28. The building was originally constructed in the 1930s as Emerson Elementary School, before being converted to Lawton City Hall in 1961.

In 1986, it was dedicated and re-named in honor of longtime mayor Wayne Gilley, who served for 24 years.

It was vacated in 2013 when the city offices were moved to the old Central Junior High School.

Various groups have looked into using the building, but nothing materialized because the renovation costs were too high.

The demolition project is expected to be completed by the end of October.
