Runners, organizers prepare for Chris Lane Memorial 5K

DUNCAN, Okla._Runners and organizers are preparing for the third annual Chris Lane Memorial 5K.

The 5K is scheduled for Saturday morning at 8:00 at the Duncan Golf and Tennis Club on Country Club Road.

Race director Tara Harper says 52 people pre-registered for Saturday's event. Though pre-registration is over, Harper says more people tend to show up on the big day. The race gives participants two options, a 5K costing $40 and a one-mile fun run for $30.

Money raised from the Chris Lane Memorial run goes to helping community children in the form of scholarships and area elementary sports teams. Harper says Saturday's race has tremendous meaning behind it.

"It's a time where we can remember Chris's life and not his death, and remember who he was and what he meant to all of us and the impact he had on this community, it's a day of celebration," Harper said.

Harper says those who register Saturday morning need to show up at the country club before 7:30 a.m. She says parking will be available at the country club, as well as the north parking lot of the First United Methodist Church on Country Club Road. They will also have shuttles operating from the country club for people utilizing the church parking lot.

Lane was killed in a drive-by shooting while jogging in Duncan in August 2013.
