Oklahoma death row inmate challenges new execution date

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ An Oklahoma death row inmate is challenging a new execution date set when a state appeals court gave him a two-week reprieve.

Attorneys for 52-year-old Richard Glossip filed a motion with the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals Tuesday claiming an order by the court setting Glossip's execution date for Sept. 30 violates state law.

Glossip was scheduled to be executed Sept. 16 for arranging the 1997 beating death of Barry Alan Van Treese of Lawton, but the court halted the execution to give judges more time to review a lengthy death penalty challenge that claims Glossip is innocent.

Glossip's motion says a new execution date cannot be set before the court dissolves its previous stay, and that it must be set either 30 or 60 days afterward.
