City looking to fill Haywood's seat

Lawton, Okla._In light of City Councilman Stanley Haywood's death two weeks ago, the city is now needing to fill his vacancy. Tuesday at city hall, Mayor Fred Fitch detailed that process.

Starting tomorrow at 8 a.m., applications will be available at the City Clerk's Office for anyone who is interested in taking his seat. Those must be filled out and returned by Thursday, October 1st at 5 p.m.

The application review process will begin during a special city council meeting on October 5th.

The city hopes to announce the newest council member by the 7th and swear in that person at October 13th's city council meeting. The city plans to appoint that person until the June 2016 election.

That's when a special election will be held for voters to decide who will fulfill the rest of Haywood's term.
