Lawton woman's murderer executed

RICHMOND, Va._A serial killer, convicted of killing three people, including a Lawton woman, and suspected of six other murders, was put to death Thursday night in Virginia.

Veronica "Tina" Jefferson was just 23 years old when she was raped and murdered in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1988 by Alfredo Prieto. Jefferson grew up in Lawton and graduated from Eisenhower High School in 1981 before moving to Virginia after college. Attorneys for Alfredo Prieto had filed an emergency motion Thursday, about an hour before his execution, over the specific drugs to be used. Virginia's attorney general said the convicted serial killer had no valid legal arguments to delay his execution, rejecting his argument that one of the drugs used in the lethal injection process might cause him unnecessary suffering.

Thursday night, Prieto thanked his lawyers, supporters and family before mumbling, "Get this over with."
