Owasso officer charged with assault

OWASSO, Okla._Charges were filed against an Owasso police officer Friday following an investigation by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

District Attorney Kevin Buchanan requested OSBI investigate Officer Michael D. Denton after he allegedly assaulted a man during a traffic stop. Cody Matthews was pulled over on June 17, 2015, and was allegedly hit by the barrel and butt of Denton's shotgun while he was unable to resist. A June 14 interview with fellow responding officers and dash camera and body camera video helped develop the facts in the case.

Denton was charged with assault and battery with a deadly weapon and reckless conduct with a firearm.

According to the Tulsa World, Denton was originally fired November 2011 for violating the department's use-of-force policy. Denton was eventually reinstated and given back pay and benefits in the amount of $283,420.04 following multiple court hearings and arbitration. Video provided by the city shows Denton elbowing a man in the face, stepping on his head and stretching his handcuffed arms. The man was arrested for public intoxication.

A court date has not been set for the current charges.
