Former mayor, councilman passes away

LAWTON, Okla._Former Lawton mayor and longtime city councilman Bob Shanklin has passed away.

He was 82 years old and had been battling Alzheimer's disease. Shanklin served one term as mayor from 1989 until 1991. He was the Ward 5 council representative for 20 years before stepping down from his seat in 2011.

Shanklin earned a reputation for speaking his mind with a blunt, straight-forward approach. His colleagues on the City Council admitted that they enjoyed his antics, even though they could be aggravating at times.

Shanklin's funeral is set for Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Cameron Baptist Church.
