Two-minute magic for No. 1 MacArthur against No. 2Ardmore

When you think of a number one ranked football team going against a number two ranked team, you expect one of the better games you will see in a season and maybe a few years. Yesterday, a Class 5A showdown between No.1 MacArthur and No. 2 Ardmore proved to be not only one of the most anticipated games of the year, but also one of the most exciting when the clock hit zero.

The highlanders overcame a 14-7 halftime deficit to defeat the Tigers 29-28. MacArthur got to within one on a 35-yard touchdown reception by Jarviar Christon. However, the image of the night came on Mac's gamble to go for two and take the lead. Senior Walter Neil took the direct snap and ran the ball in wide armed and untouched. Head Coach Brett Manning said a two-point try was always the plan because his players weren't ready to quit.

"In that last defensive series, when they were still winning, I said I'm going to take timeouts be thinking of...two-minute plays and be thinking about a two-point play because I don't want to go to overtime,” said Brett Manning, MacArthur head coach. “We've been in a lot of big games, you know, not only this year, but as a program. And I feel like that we know that you don't ever quit. You keep playing."

Aside from Neil's go-ahead conversion, the bright side of the final drive was the poise and play of quarterback JR Winningham.

"He has handled this entire season in a very mature way. I'm very proud of him. He's a sophomore. He got thrown in a bad situation and...continues to progress and do well. He's a good kid. Good player," said Manning.

The victory keep Mac undefeated at 7-0 and 4-0 in district 5A-1. Now the Highlanders get ready for a short week as they host Chickasha on Thursday.
