Lawton mayor, police chief read to children

LAWTON, Okla._Lawton's mayor and police chief took part in United Way's reading program, "Families Read Every Day."

Families Read Every Day, or FRED, got its start through Smart Start Oklahoma and Success by Six programs. Lawton Mayor Fred Fitch, Police Chief James Smith and several other city officials volunteered their time Tuesday to read to groups of area Pre-K children.

Mayor Fitch read a book about Charlie Brown a classroom of children at a daycare in west Lawton. Police Chief James Smith was also there to read to children in another classroom.

Mayor Fitch says this program helps stress the importance of spending time reading to your kids.

“It’s so important, my parents read to me when I was little, I read to my boys when they were little and I'm hoping when parents read to their children today…reading is something that you got to have and have good structure within that, because you'll use it all your life," Mayor Fitch said.

After reading the books to the kids, each book is donated to the daycare's library.
