Elementary school gets early start to Red Ribbon Week

LAWTON, Okla._Students at Ridgecrest Elementary School got a visit from several law enforcement agencies in honor of Red Ribbon Week.

The students kicked off the event with presentations from the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and the Lawton Police Department. Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country.

Tara Burns, a teacher at Ridgecrest Elementary, says the goal is to teach students about the dangers of drugs and alcohol while giving them positive alternatives to reach their goals.

“Our goal is to keep them busy with other activities and have them focus on where they want to go in their life and what they want to be when they grow up,” Burns said.

Burns says one of the ways LPS is doing that is by creating career-bound and college-ready citizens.

Red Ribbon Week runs all next week. Burns says the school goes all out for the event because they want the kids to be excited about being drug free.
