Sooner run game proves to be difference maker in win over Texas Tech

Coming into Saturday, it was all about Baker Mayfield against Texas Tech in Norman. However, it was the Sooner run game that took over in OU's 63-27 victory. Sooners ran for over 400 yards and 7 scores as a team. Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon accounted for 355 of those yards and 6 touchdowns.  Offensive Coordinator Lincoln Riley knew the run game was ready to breakout.

"We've felt like the running game was close. I've been telling you guys that and you guys are probably tired of hearing it. And we finally got over the hump a little bit today. Now, that doesn't mean we've got it figured out or we're over the hump for any other time, but we did today,” said Riley. “We had a lot of big holes early and guys were running through some tackles. And then, you know, even as they start to load the box a little bit more, you know, our backs were good enough to make guys miss or to run through tackles. We were pretty consistent the whole day. So, you know, that's kind of what was given to us and that's been our goal. Again, to be able to...we got to be what the game kind of dictates that we're going to be and, you know, what they're playing against us and we were able to do that today."

"Running the ball. That makes my job easy. When you have two horses like that in the backfield and you get your offensive line going, I mean, it's great for me. And I mean...the touchdown to Mark, it was just a play-action pass and he was wide open just because the running game was working. All the credit due to the running game and the big guys up front and the boys making people miss," said Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma Junior Quarterback.

Baker still put up a decent game throwing for over 200 yards and two touchdowns. Oklahoma now heads back to the drawing board as they prepare to take on Kansas next Saturday in Lawrence.
