Leslie Powell Gallery hosts lecture, art exhibition

LAWTON, Okla._The Leslie Powell Foundation Gallery will host an evening lecture over Lawton’s downtown revitalization effort and opening reception for artwork by Oklahoma high school students on Saturday, November 14, from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.

Starting at 6:00 p.m., Joe Tilton will present a lecture and discussion regarding Lawton’s downtown revitalization efforts. Tilton is the vice president of the Fairmont District Experience, which centers on the renovation of the old Fairmont Creamery. The lecture will conclude at 6:45 PM with time for questions and answers from the audience.

From 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., the artwork of Oklahoma high school students will be in the spotlight with the opening reception for the Oklahoma Arts Institute’s Tour de Quartz exhibition. The students created the artwork during the 2015 Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute at Quartz Mountain, a prestigious academy held every June and taught by nationally renowned artists. Former faculty members include winners of the Pulitzer Prize and the Academy, Tony, Emmy and Grammy awards. The 2015 drawing and printmaking students were taught by sculptor and painter Marc Vinciquerra of Florence, Italy. Legendary photographer Keith Carter of Beaumont, Texas, led the photography students.

Student artists are selected by competitive statewide auditions, and every student accepted automatically receives a full scholarship to the program. Auditions occur from January through early March at locations across the state. Included in this year’s show is a self-portrait by Ashleigh Morris of Eisenhower High School.

The Oklahoma Arts Institute is a private, non-profit organization developed in 1977, with a mission to provide exceptional multidisciplinary arts experiences that develop individual talent and inspire a lifelong passion for the arts. In addition to the Summer Arts Institute, OAI administers a series of continuing education workshops for adults every fall. The Leslie Powell Foundation Gallery was a sponsor of the 2015 Summer Arts Institute; the Tour de Quartz is sponsored by SONIC, America’s Drive-In.

Admission to the lecture and art show is free and everyone is invited to attend. Refreshments will be served after the lecture and during the opening reception. The Tour de Quartz show will remain at the gallery until Wednesday, December 30. The Leslie Powell Foundation Gallery is open Monday through Friday from noon until 4:00 p.m. and is located at 620 SW ‘D’ Ave. in Lawton.

More information about the gallery is available at lpgallery.org or by calling 580 357-9526; the gallery is also on Facebook. For more information about the Oklahoma Arts Institute or the Tour de Quartz, visit oaiquartz.org or call 405 605-7500.
