Hitchhiker suspected of shooting and killing woman

CANTON, Okla._Investigators are looking for a hitchhiker suspected of shooting and killing an 18-year-old woman after she and another man gave him a ride from Oklahoma City. Residents in Canton, Okla. say things like this rarely happen. So when they saw police tape outside of the police department, some say it took them by surprise.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation says a man and a woman driving from OKC picked up a hitchhiker in their pick-up. When he went to get out, police say he shot the woman.

"Right now we believe that this happened two to three miles east of town and the person drove in town seeking help," said Major Todd Doyals.

The driver found help at the Canton police station. The woman died from the gunshot wounds.

The suspect has been identified as 23-year-old Christopher Scruggs. He was seen on surveillance video at a convenience store in Watonga. They still don't know why the man shot the woman.

OSBI encourages anyone with information about the investigation to call the tip line at 1-800-522-8017.
