Police: 56 cattle found dead on property in Muskogee County

WARNER, Okla. (AP) - Authorities say a man could face charges after 56 cattle were found dead and more than 200 others were found emaciated on his property near the Muskogee-McIntosh county line.

Muskogee County Sheriff Charles Pearson says deputies responded to the property Tuesday after two Iowa ranchers reported that the property's owner had neglected their cattle that were being pastured there.

Pearson says many of the carcasses were within sight of the property owner's residence and were in a pond, which caused many of the live animals to not drink from the pond over an extended period of time. Authorities say about 75 cattle are unaccounted for.

According to Pearson, the property owner faces at least 56 counts of animal neglect or cruelty and possibly embezzlement. Police say the owner has been cooperative.
