New gun laws take effect

OKLAHOMA CITY_Misdemeanor drug convictions are no longer a permanent barrier for Oklahoman residents wanting to legally carry a gun.

Historically, misdemeanor convictions relating to illegal drug use or possession, including possession of drug paraphernalia, permanently took away a person's right to a gun license.

But, starting Sunday, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation will be able to issue licenses to those with prior misdemeanor drug convictions so long as the sentence was completed more than 10 years ago.

In addition, applicants wanting to pay their processing fee with a nationally recognized credit card or through electronic funds transfer must use the OSBI’s online application portal.
