Updates to breast cancer imaging discussed at presentation

LAWTON, Okla._Breast cancer imaging is a topic we seem to hear a lot about and the Cancer Centers of Southwest Oklahoma in Lawton hosted a presentation on the subject Friday.

Dr. Robyn Birdwell from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston spoke about updates in breast imaging. Dr. Birdwell highlighted where breast cancer may originate in the body and why, along with how doctors look for breast cancer in both symptomatic and, more importantly, asymptomatic women. Dr. Birdwell also spoke about why the American Cancer Society recently changed their guidelines on when women should get a mammogram.

"We are all a little confused. A lot of us don't know the right answer because there is no single one answer. Everyone agrees, screening mammography saves lives. One of the questions is again, who needs them, how often and what kind of tools should be use," Dr. Birdwell said.

One of those new screening tools is tomosynthesis, or 3D mammography, which is being used at Comanche County Memorial Hospital. In addition to being the section head of the division of breast imaging at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Dr. Birdwell is also an associate professor of radiology at Harvard Medical School.
