Governor Fallin orders flags at half-staff to honor Paris victims, Master Sgt Wheeler

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla._Governor Mary Fallin has order the Oklahoma and American flags to be flown at half-staff on all state property until 5:00 p.m. Thursday.

Governor Fallin announced Monday that state and national flags would be lowered to half-staff in honor of the victims from the Paris attack and in honor of Master Sergeant Joshua L. Wheeler, who was killed in October in Iraq.

Wheeler, who grew up in Roland, Oklahoma, was identified as the first American soldier to die in combat against the Islamic State group in Iraq and applauded as a hero by Defense Secretary Ash Carter. Wheeler, 39, a 20-year Army veteran, was killed when he and dozens of U.S. special operations troops and Iraqi forces raided a compound near the city of Kirkuk, freeing approximately 70 Iraqi prisoners from captivity.

His burial will be Wednesday at Arlington National Cemetery.

Friday’s mass killing in Paris left at least 129 people dead and injured about 350 others. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the coordinated assault by gunmen and bombers.
