LAWTON, Okla._The 6th annual Fishing for the Food Bank fundraiser is set for Saturday, November 21, at Lake Helen in Elmer Thomas Park.
You can fish for free, and without a license, all morning. All you need to bring are canned goods for the Lawton Food Bank. You can trade those for raffle tickets and be entered to win several prizes including bicycles, free stays at hotels and more. They will also have food, fun and prizes and awards and a competition to see who can catch the largest fish. The contest for the largest fish costs $10 to join and the winner gets $100.
The event's founder, Michael Tenis, said it started as a simple way for families and kids to spend time together while fishing in the winter, but has turned into a huge benefit for the food bank.
"The Lawton Food Bank serves a really wide community, it's not just Lawton, it's Lawton and Fort Sill. And especially this time of year with the holidays coming up, they get a run where people need food," Tenis said.
The event runs from 8:00 a.m. until noon Saturday. Later that night, Lawton's annual Holiday in the Park parade makes its way through the park after starting at Southwest 2nd Street and "C" Avenue at 6:30 p.m., capped off by the lighting of the huge Christmas tree.
