LAWTON, Okla._A former NFL defensive tackle from Lawton spent the day in a 4th-grade classroom as he passed along some life lessons.

Cecil Martin Chase was born in Lawton on December 19, 1974, and attended Hoover Elementary before it was renamed Ridgecrest Elementary. He was drafted into the NFL in 1998 as a defensive tackle for the Baltimore Ravens. He went on to play for the New Orleans Saints, Washington Redskins, New York Giants and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

During his visit to Ridgecrest Elementary Tuesday, Chase told the 4th-grade students that they should all have dreams and goals. Chase told the students it all starts in the classroom and that his mother made him put school before sports. Chase credits his teachers for helping him to succeed and make his dreams of playing for OU and in the NFL a reality.

His overall message to the students was to put school first, and then sports, because an education is what will really help them succeed.
