No. 4 Altus moves on to 5A championship game, defeats No. 6 Bishop McGuinness 49-35

The Altus Bulldogs punched their ticket to the Class 5A State Championship game with a 49-35 win over Bishop McGuiness. Don't let the score fool you. This one was much closer than that.

Altus struck first on the opening drive of the game. Quarterback Jayden Benway ran the ball in for a touchdown 46-yards on a keeper giving the bulldogs a 7-0 lead. the defense would play their fair share of ball in the opening quarter.

In the second period, the Bulldogs found the endzone again as Benway connected with Shaquan French on a 22-yard touchdown, 14-0 Altus leading. However, the Fighting Irish finally got a groove going in the passing game on their ensuing drive. QB Jacob Mullins hit Matt Chancellor for a 39-yard completion to the Altus one-yard line. Zach Segell would punch it in to make the score 14-7 at halftime.

Altus once again got things going early on their first possession of the half. Benway kept it again himself 17 yards for the touchdown giving the Bulldogs a 21-7 lead. Irish stick with their pass game though and tie the game at 21 in the third with consecutive touchdown passes by Mullins of 46 and 37 yards.

The game would be tied at 35 with under seven minutes to play in the contest. But with just under two-minutes to play, Benway would run in a one-yard score to give the Bulldogs a 42-35 lead. The Altus defense steps up on the ensuing Irish drive, forcing a turnover on downs. Then Benway once again breaks a 29-yard touchdown run to all but seal an Altus victory 49-35.

This is Altus' first trip to a state championship game since 2001. They will take on Collinsville Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Yukon High School.
