Candidate filing opens Monday

LAWTON, Okla._If you’re looking to get involved in community leadership, you may soon have an opportunity.

School board elections for several area school districts in Comanche County, as well as the election for Ward 7 City Council, won’t be held until February 9, 2016, but registration to run for those positions begins Monday.

To run for the positions, you must be a legal resident who has lived in the area for at least six months and also be a registered voter. All school board positions are off-limits to anyone working for the school district or has relatives working for the school district or is a current school board member to the second degree. "Second degree" relationship covers spouse, child, parent, grandchild, grandparent, brother, sister, spouse’s child, spouse’s grandchild, spouse’s brother, spouse’s sister, spouse’s grandparent, grandchild’s spouse, parent’s spouse and child’s spouse.

Election Board secretary Amy Sims says it's important to have as many candidates as possible run for the positions, and that every registered voter gets out to vote in the election.

"I would encourage people to register to vote, first off, and then vote in every election that you're eligible for. That's your right, that's what we fight for is to be able to vote," Sims said.

Individuals who want to run for either position need to go to the election office in room 206 at the Comanche County Courthouse between Monday, December 7, and Wednesday, December 9, to fill out the proper paperwork. You can also download the forms here.
