Salvation Army offers class to help people get out of poverty

LAWTON, Okla._The Lawton Salvation Army is offering a class for those in the area who are living below or slightly above the poverty line.

The goal is to teach them the skills they need to climb out of that situation, and become self-sufficient. The 20-week transformational class is called "Getting Ahead in a Just Getting by World."

Participants will learn about finances, parenting, emotional development and goal setting. Salvation Army Captain Claudia Roseno says members of last year's class were able to change their way of thinking to become better citizens.

"They were able to see and speak on their own at the end saying ‘I am in the driver’s seat of my life. I am taking control of this. I know that I am worth something and I can give back to this community,’" Capt. Roseno said.

Starting in February 2016, the class will meet once a week for two and a half hours. The deadline to apply is January 14, 2016.

Applications can be picked up at the Salvation Army, DHS, Comanche County Health Department, Great Plains Improvement Foundation, CrossRoads, United Way and Arvest Banks.
