Children get a chance to Shop with a Cop

LAWTON, Okla. Christmas came early for a group of Lawton kids.

During the third annual Shop with a Cop event, 25 lucky kids selected from Lawton Public Schools, were given $100 to buy whatever they wanted. Some decided to hit the toy aisles and others shopped for clothes and they all did it with the help of their very own Lawton police officer.

"These kids are so excited when they get to see us, of course they get to see someone in uniform and we get to hang with them and sometimes it's like we're their own personal little bodyguards," said Lawton police detective Charles Whittington.

Throughout the year, the Fraternal Order of Police and the Lawton Police Department host several fundraising events to make sure kids get a special Christmas, while also strengthening their relationship with police officers.

"I mean it shows the ability to interact with these kids on their level, helps them relate to us and show there's more to us than just a badge and a gun," said Whittington.

Shop with a Cop events take place at Target stores in more than 200 communities, helping to pair in-need youth with public safety officers.
