Police release name of suspect in I-40 shootings

CUSTER COUNTY, Okla._The man involved in a pair of deadly shootings along I-40 has been identified.

Police in western Oklahoma received multiple phone calls Wednesday night about a driver committing acts of road rage. Callers told police he was shooting at cars. One man, 45-year-old Jeffrey Kent Powell, of Arapaho, was shot in his car near Hydro, Oklahoma.  Powell died at the scene.

A short time later, Weatherford police found a woman had been shot in her car, seven miles away from the first shooting at mile marker 84. The woman, 63-year-old Billie Jean West of Lone Wolf, was pronounced dead at a Weatherford hospital.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol was able to catch up with the pickup truck described by callers. A short pursuit started and went into Washita County before going back and ending in Custer County. Jeremy Doss Hardy eventually pulled onto the shoulder at mile marker 50 and surrendered.

Hardy, of Pasadena, Texas, was arrested on a complaint of DUI. OSBI's investigative and crime scenes agents are working with local, county and state officers to collect evidence at the multiple shooting scenes, which Hardy is the subject of.
