DUNCAN, OK (KSWO) -A mother is behind bars after police say she was driving under the influence of drugs with her baby in the car.
Duncan police say Joni Rae Mendinghall was pulled over Wednesday on U.S. Highway 81, a few miles south of the Lawton/Duncan 'Y', because she was driving 13 mph below the speed limit and crossed over the lane divider twice. Police say she was also had slurred speech and swayed back and forth in her seat. That's when the officer noticed a baby in a carrier in the back seat, with no seat belt. Mendinghall told the officer the seat belt was broken.
The officer saw a surgical glove in the car and asked to see it, and that's when he learned the glove had three baggies of crystal substance and a baggie of "green leafy substance" in it.
The officer tried to conduct a sobriety test, but Mendinghall would not cooperate.
She was arrested on for driving under the influence of drugs, child endangerment and she had a warrant out of Comanche County. She remains in the Stephens County Jail on a $500,000 bond
Mendinghall's 1-year-old child is now with her brother.
