DUNCAN, OK (KSWO) - Martin Luther King, Jr Day celebrations kicked off Sunday night with sounds from a Grammy winning gospel singer. Helen Baylor performed in Duncan to an almost packed Palace Theatre on Main Street. This is the first year the gospel concert has been a part of the celebration.
Shannon Sanders, one of the event's organizers, says they have this event to celebrate King's life, but also to teach the future generations about him.
"Basically just to try to bring more unity in the community," said Sanders. "We want people to understand and know about MLK's legacy, and what he really stood for in equality for all."
The celebration continues tomorrow with a morning church service, a march on Main Street and a free movie showing.
